Introduction
India’s defence forces — Army, Navy, and Air Force — have a unique pay structure separate from civilian Central Government employees. While the 8th Pay Commission will benefit defence personnel too, there are some important differences to understand. In this guide, we explain how 8th CPC will work for defence employees.
How Defence Pay Is Different
Defence personnel have their own pay matrix under the 7th CPC with unique Military Service Pay (MSP) and various operational allowances that do not apply to civilian employees. The 8th Pay Commission will cover defence pay as well, but the fitment factor and allowances may be recommended separately for defence.

Military Service Pay (MSP)
MSP is an additional allowance that is unique to defence personnel. Under 7th CPC, MSP is:
- Officers (Lieutenant and above): Rs 15,500 per month
- Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs): Rs 5,200 per month
- Other Ranks (ORs): Rs 3,600 per month
MSP is expected to be revised under 8th CPC. Employee bodies have demanded a significant increase in MSP. Add your MSP to the calculator result to get your complete salary picture.
Operational Allowances — Separate from Basic Pay
Defence personnel also receive various operational allowances that are separate from the basic pay calculation:
- Siachen Allowance — for high-altitude postings
- Field Area Allowance — for operational field postings
- Counter-Insurgency Allowance — for CI/CT operations
- Hard Area Allowance — for difficult terrain postings
These allowances are revised separately during each pay commission and their revised rates under 8th CPC will be announced by the Ministry of Defence.
Defence Pension Under 8th CPC
Defence pensioners will also benefit from 8th CPC. Pension is calculated based on the last drawn basic pay. A higher basic pay at retirement means a higher pension. For One Rank One Pension (OROP) beneficiaries, separate notifications will be issued by the Ministry of Defence.
